Losing Interest – Poem
Posted on 17. Jan, 2009 by Mom Mag in Family
She loses interest in the warm yellow sun
waking her mornings between six and seven,
hearing the chirping of the birds.
Her Boxer-Shepherd yelps to break out
into autumn air, as she lumbers off the bed–slides
on fuzzy blue slippers and sluggishly walks
to the kitchen door. Feeling a burst of cold
splash against her skin, the dog darts outside,
scattering the crows off the fence.
After shaking the kids up and getting them off
to school, she loses interest in the bright blue
day. Tries to unwrinkle her thoughts
into neatly folded bath towels, drowning in
the tumbling drum of the dryer’s next load
as the day goes on as usual–time races in circles.
Between to the grocery store and post office,
she makes a pit stop to the gas station for cigarettes
losing interest in the nicotine filling her lungs.
Drives her mind insane to a vacant parking lot
and watches the passing cars fall under her eyelids
as light filters through the windshield.
At home–kids are fed something fresh from
the oven during the crunching sounds of homework
papers and the blare of the T.V–evening moves
to night, and as she looks out her bedroom window
into a navy sky, sensing another sleepless night
upon her, she wonders–has the moon lost interest too?
