Open The Door

Upon leaving my Bible study one morning, I was positioning my three year old in her car seat when my attention was caught with the sound of a thud. The wind had swung my door open, hitting the van parked next to me. I quickly accessed the damage and was relieved there was only a light coat of red on the car next to me.

I spoke to the driver who was sitting in her car and turned to leave. I now discovered that my car door was shut, locked, with my three year old in the car, and my keys sitting on the seat. I tried to get my daughter to open the door. She was clueless to my instructions and proceeded to pretend she was driving. Trying not to panic, I wondered how in the world I was going to get this child to open the door. No matter what I said or where I pointed, she wouldn’t grab the handle.

“Roll down the window.” I told my daughter. Nothing. She just smiled at me and kept on driving. Finally, grabbing the window, I discovered a gap.

“Lana, get the keys.” She looked around like they were going to fall from the sky somehow. When she finally spotted them I said, “Put them in the window.” I showed her where by placing my fingers in the window. She proceeded to put her fingers in the window.

“Put the keys in the window.” She dropped them once, and then finally got them through the window. Victory! I was in the car. The lesson I learned was to make sure your child knows where the door handle is located. Fortunately, I had not gotten her fully strapped in the car seat yet, or I would have been in a heap of trouble that day.

ooo we had a simillar experience with our 3 year old at the Airport. The door swung shut and the central locking locked all the doors, with our 3 year old strapped in her seat….it took us 10 min to calm her down as she was screaming. she managed to press the button on her seatbelt and release herself, crawl to the front seat, remove the keys and press the button on the keyring to release the doors…I AM GREATFULL, my husband had taught her how to use the keys…and I had taught her how to release herself from the seat incase of an emergency!
